The Potts' party is helped and hidden by the local Toymaker who now works for the Baron. He bluffs his abilities to the Baron to avoid being executed. Grandpa is taken to the castle, and is ordered by the Baron to make another floating car just for him. Truly, and the children see their grandfather, Bungie Potts, being taken away on an airship, following it to Vulgaria, which involves the magic car sprouting wings and propellers to fly. The Baron sends two spies to capture the car, but they capture Lord Scrumptious, and then Grandpa Potts by chance, mistaking each for the car's inventor.
The story begins with the quartet escaping Bomburst's pirates. Caractacus tells them a story about nasty Baron Bomburst, the tyrant of fictional Vulgaria, who wants to steal Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In the first trip of the car, Caractacus, the children, and a wealthy woman they've had unflattering encounters with before, Truly Scrumptious, picnic on the beach. He purchases the car and gives it a new name, "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" for the unusual noise of its engine. They beg their father, down-on-his-luck inventor Caractacus Potts, to get the car for them he makes multiple unsuccessful attempts to sell his inventions in order to raise money to but it, until he earns tips from a song-and-dance act at a carnival. At a rural England garage, two children, Jeremy and Jermima Potts, find a car formerly used for racing in the European Grand Prix until it crashed in 1909.Turville itself is a regular location, seen as ‘Bramley End’ in the excellent wartime thriller Went The Day Well? and more recently as the village in which Peter Sarsgaard pulls a scam in 2009’s Oscar nominated An Education.The synopsis below may give away important plot points. The airship of Baron Bomburst ( Gert Frobe) hovers over the hillside near the village of Turville, just southwest of Cadmore End. When Potts drives Truly and the kids down to the beach from Cadmore End, they end up by the sea at Cape Taillat, near Saint-Tropez in the South of France. It seems the car has pretty miraculous powers already. Being so convenient, the mansion is a familiar screen presence in Pinewood based films – which include James Bond and Carry On. The house of Truly Scrumptious ( Sally Anne Howes) is Heatherden Hall, at the heart of the Pinewood Studios lot at Iver Heath, also in Buckinghamshire. They no longer live there, but it’s still a private home. It was restored cosmetically for the film, and a few years later restored completely (even getting a swimming pool) as a home for actress Hayley Mills and husband, director Roy Boulting. Until 1873 it remained a working mill but, after being damaged by fire, it lay derelict. The windmill home of Caractacus Potts ( Dick Van Dyke) is Cobstone Windmill, at Cadmore End on the B482 about four miles west of High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.Ĭobstone Mill was built around 1816, overlooking the village of Turville (it’s often called Turville Windmill).
In-joke spotters will have twigged that George Coggins, the original owner of of the dilapidated racer, is James Bond’s Q, the late Desmond Llewellyn. When Ian Fleming wasn’t dreaming up missions for 007, he kicked back and relaxed with this children’s story about the eccentric inventor who transforms a clapped-out racing car into a magical toy.
